NoFap and Depression: Why You Feel Worse Before You Feel Better

A few days or weeks into NoFap, something unexpected shows up: you feel genuinely low.

Not just bored or restless. Actually flat. Unmotivated, emotionally numb, maybe sad without a clear reason. And you start wondering if quitting was the wrong call.

It wasn’t. But before we get into the why, one thing first.

The Dopamine Valley

Your brain runs on dopamine. It’s the neurotransmitter behind motivation, anticipation, pleasure — basically, the reason anything feels worth doing.

Porn delivers an unnaturally large dopamine hit, over and over, on demand. Over time, your brain adapts by reducing its baseline dopamine sensitivity. This is called downregulation. The receptors pull back to compensate for constant overstimulation.

When you quit, the dopamine floods stop. But the downregulated receptors don’t immediately bounce back. For a period — usually somewhere between days 5 and 30, peaking around days 10–20 — you’re in what some people call the dopamine valley. Your brain isn’t producing as much of the feel-good response to everyday life as it normally would, and the artificial source is gone.

That gap creates a depression-like state. Low energy. Emotional flatness. Loss of interest in things you normally enjoy. It mimics depression because at a neurochemical level, it’s doing something similar.

Is This the Flatline or Actual Depression?

This is the question a lot of guys get stuck on, so let’s lay it out clearly.

The flatline tends to look like this: low libido, emotional numbness, and a general sense of “blah” that showed up after you quit. It didn’t exist before — or at least not at this intensity. And over time, usually weeks 3–5, it starts to gradually lift. It’s a withdrawal symptom, not a permanent state.

Depression looks different. It’s persistent sadness or emptiness that doesn’t track with when you quit. It comes with loss of interest in everything — not just sex or porn. It often includes hopelessness, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, and it doesn’t improve on its own after a few weeks. If anything, it stays flat or gets worse.

The simplest question to ask yourself: Did this start after I quit, or was it already there?

Because here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough — some guys find that quitting porn reveals depression that was always there. The dopamine cycle was masking it. Porn was the numbing agent, and when you remove it, the thing it was covering becomes visible. That’s not NoFap causing depression. That’s NoFap exposing something that needs real attention.

💡

If your low mood started after quitting porn and is gradually improving, that’s likely the flatline. If it was there before, or it’s getting worse after several weeks, talk to a professional — you may be dealing with depression that porn was covering up.

A Note If You’re on Antidepressants

If you’re already taking SSRIs or other antidepressants, NoFap isn’t a replacement for your medication. Full stop.

Some SSRIs lower libido as a side effect. That can feel eerily similar to a flatline — low sex drive, emotional blunting, reduced sensitivity. It’s easy to confuse the two, and it’s easy to think “maybe I don’t need the meds anymore since I’m doing NoFap.”

Don’t stop medication without talking to your doctor. Quitting an SSRI abruptly can cause its own withdrawal symptoms that make everything worse. If you want to explore adjusting your treatment, that’s a conversation to have with a professional — not a decision to make alone at 2 AM.

NoFap can support your mental health. It’s not a substitute for clinical care.

When the Valley Usually Lifts

There’s no universal timeline, but most people report the worst of the emotional flatness peaking somewhere in weeks 2–3 and beginning to lift by weeks 3–4.

Check the when does NoFap get easier breakdown for a more detailed look at the timeline. The short version: there’s usually a noticeable shift around the 3–4 week mark, though for some it takes longer depending on how long and how heavily they were using.

The valley does have a floor, and it’s followed by a climb.

What Guys Actually Experience on the Other Side

One thing that helps during the low stretch is hearing from people who’ve been through it.

“As a man with genetic depression, being porn-free has done more for me than any drugs I have ever had to take. It is as if this makes me more alert, attentive, and happier than Wellbutrin, Zoloft or the other drugs I was cycled through.” — from Your Brain on Porn by Gary Wilson

“Quitting is the anti-depressant I needed. 9 months ago I was a 25-year old university drop out, working a job I hated and depressed. A few months after I quit porn, I got my superpowers. I think that I don’t have depression anymore.” — from Your Brain on Porn by Gary Wilson

These aren’t guarantees. Not everyone’s story ends the same way, and “superpowers” is a strong word. But the pattern — feeling significantly better after pushing through the valley — shows up over and over in recovery communities. The low period isn’t a sign that something’s going wrong. For most guys, it’s a sign that something’s finally changing.

How to Get Through the Valley

Exercise. This one’s non-negotiable if you’re in the valley. Cardiovascular exercise in particular increases dopamine and serotonin directly. Even a 20–30 minute run can meaningfully shift mood for hours. It’s the most evidence-backed tool that’s immediately accessible.

Morning sunlight. Get outside within an hour of waking up. Light exposure affects serotonin production and circadian rhythm. It sounds too simple to matter, but it does.

Social contact. Porn use is isolating. Recovery benefits from the opposite. Being around people — even in low-key, no-pressure ways — activates social reward circuitry that starts filling the gap porn left.

Sleep. Emotional regulation tanks with poor sleep, and the valley is already taxing your reserves. Protect your sleep schedule like it’s part of the recovery — because it is.

Journaling or daily check-ins. Externalizing what you’re feeling reduces the internal weight of it. It also helps you track the pattern: you’ll notice the bad days don’t compound forever. A brief daily check-in with someone who knows what you’re doing keeps you on track and creates connection. Both help.

And one thing to avoid: don’t try to wait it out passively. Sitting alone scrolling your phone while hoping the valley passes on its own doesn’t work. The lifestyle inputs matter. Same goes for relapsing to feel better — it’ll provide about twenty minutes of relief followed by a crash that’s worse than what you were trying to escape.

💡

Exercise, sunlight, sleep, and social connection aren’t exciting recommendations. But during the dopamine valley, they’re the interventions that actually move the needle — not willpower, not motivation, just consistent basics.

When to See a Doctor

Talk to someone if:

  • The low mood was there before you started NoFap
  • You’ve been in the valley for more than 4–6 weeks with no signs of lifting
  • You’re having difficulty functioning day-to-day
  • You’re having any thoughts of self-harm or suicide

None of those are signs of failure. They’re signs you need the right kind of support. Remember: 988 (call or text) and 741741 (text HOME) are always available.

For most people, the depression-like phase of NoFap is temporary and manageable. But if yours isn’t lifting, get help. Recovery is worth doing right.

If you want to track your streak, log your daily mood, and have a place to check in through the low days, Obex is built for exactly this stretch.
